South American Banana Suppliers

Bananas are one of the world’s most popular fruits that grow rapidly and have been one of the healthiest fruits consumed by humans for many years. They contain starch as the main carbohydrate, but they are also rich sources of fiber and antioxidants (Vitamin C), besides helping our body to absorb calcium and improve the iron’s absorption.

Grown in at least 107 countries, it is a very popular export product, as it can be harvested all year round. In fact, bananas are one of the most traded commodities in the world today. Considering that approximately 50% of the world’s bananas are grown in regions south of the equator, this should come as no surprise. South American banana suppliers offer truly remarkable products: yet few outside the region really know about them.

The continent that supplies a large percentage of the world’s bananas

The countries on this side of the continent produce a wide variety of goods that are exported to many countries around the world. Banana production in South America has a history of more than 100 years and is considered one of the most important economic resources in the region. They are the most popular fruit on this side of the world and much of that popularity can be attributed to their pleasant taste and their ability to make everything taste better.

Currently, world production is at 58 million tons and South American banana suppliers have established themselves as the main producing countries, thus dominating the world banana economy, which is mostly grown in large monoculture plantations. South America has become a major supplier of fresh bananas, in addition to exporting to numerous nations around the world.

In Latin America, the main producer country for the exporting industry of this product is Ecuador, followed by Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama. However, other countries such as Brazil, the Caribbean states of the Windward Islands (St. Lucia, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts-Nevis and St. Vincent), Jamaica, Belize, Dominican Republic and Suriname are also major producers.

Which South American country is the largest supplier of bananas?

The exporting sector has been an important pillar of the Latin American economy since the 1950s, when rising prices and an increase in demand from northern countries (today North America and the European Union account for more than 60% of world imports) led to a rapid expansion of production. As a result, South American banana suppliers now account for 26% of the total.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, South America’s largest banana suppliers are Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama. Ecuador is by far, the largest single producer of bananas in both South America and the world, ranking among the top five banana producers with sales of some US$2.8 billion per year to some twelve destinations, including Russia, the United States and the Middle East.

However, Colombia was historically the principal supplier until it was displaced in 2003 by its Andean neighbor. That year, Ecuador entered into a process of economic liberalization that, combined with a favorable climate, led to an increase in exports that has been sustained ever since. While Ecuadorian bananas account for almost half of the regional total, Colombia remains one of the most important suppliers in South America, with 15% of exports.

A look at Peru

The great diversity of natural conditions and agricultural activities in this region has led to the cultivation of a wide variety of bananas. In some areas, bananas are grown in plantations on large farms, while in others they are produced on small plots by family farmers. This is the case in most of Peru (where smallholders account for about 85% of total production), Ecuador (50%), Colombia (40%), Brazil (28%) and Venezuela (25%).
